Flouts take up more space (or external) but are designed to move highly polluted water reliably. given the choice of having to use a 'syphon' or a flout or a vertical float syphon (and that is an inaccurate description) i would go the flout any day. the proviso is that you don't use a used amway vacuum cleaner hose, it only lasted a year..
